Institute of Iberian and Ibero-American Studies

We are one of the leading centres for research and education in the languages, literatures and cultures of the Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking world in Poland. We combine a long-standing academic tradition with a modern, interdisciplinary approach to teaching and research.

Education

We offer degree programmes in the following fields: Iberian Studies: Spanish Studies, Iberian Studies: Portuguese Studies, Applied Spanish Studies (evening programme) and Iberian Philology (Master’s degree). Our academic programmes prepare students both for further academic careers and for working in an international environment.

Research

Our research covers a wide range of topics relating to the Iberian Peninsula, Latin America and the Lusophone world, including classical and contemporary literature, history and cultural memory, film and media, discourse analysis, migration, religions, and the relationship between culture and the environment. We conduct research as part of numerous research teams and international projects funded by, amongst others, the National Science Centre and the European Research Council (ERC).

History

The history of Iberian studies in Warsaw dates back to the interwar period. The establishment in 1972 of the Department of Iberian Studies – the first of its kind in Poland – and its transformation in 2000 into the Institute of Iberian and Ibero-American Studies marked the beginning of a period of dynamic growth in research and teaching that continues to this day.

Academic Staff

The high quality of education is confirmed by the outstanding ratings awarded by the Polish Accreditation Committee and the quality-enhancement funding received. Thanks to its dedicated staff and wide range of courses, the Institute remains one of the most important centres for Iberian studies in Poland.
